PROPERTIES

Tantalum is a rare metal with a steel gray luster, a melting point of 2980°C and a density of 16.6 g/cm 3. Tantalum is a very stable chemical element with similar properties to niobium. Tantalum is ductile and can be drawn into fine wire or made into thin foil. Its coefficient of thermal expansion is very small, expanding by only 6.6 parts per million per degree Celsius. In addition, it is very ductile, more so than copper.

Tantalum also has excellent chemical properties and is extremely resistant to corrosion. It does not react to hydrochloric acid, concentrated nitric acid or "aqua regia" under either cold or hot conditions. At room temperature, tantalum does not react to alkaline solutions, chlorine gas, bromine water, dilute sulfuric acid and many other agents, but only to hydrofluoric acid and hot concentrated sulfuric acid.
